Air Sealing and Radiant Barriers - home in winter

The Energy to Heat and Cool Your Home is too Expensive to Waste

When you hear “residential radiant energy barriers,” does it sound like science fiction to you?

Would you be surprised to learn a radiant barrier (often known as a space blanket) is a relatively inexpensive home investment that can bring significant savings in heating and cooling?

Green Energy meets 21st Century Weatherization

Benefits of Air Sealing:

  •  Comfort – fewer hot or cold spots in your home
  •  Reduction of dust and pollen
  •  Reduces infiltration of outdoor air pollutants
  •  Eliminate paths for insect infestation
  •  Reduced condensation and moisture problems
  •  Reduced likelihood of mold and mildew
  •  ICE DAM control

Benefits of Radiant Barriers:

  •  Control of radiant heat
  •  Comfort – cooler in the summer, warmer in winter
  •  Condensation control
  •  Control of attic venting
  •  ICE DAMS  (Control New England’s dreaded Ice Dams once and for all!)

Tell Me More about Air Sealing and Radiant Barriers

Ice DamsAir sealing & radiant barriers go hand in hand.  Air sealing works to control leakage in or out of your home’s structure (also known as its “building envelope”).  The force in nature causing this air exchange is known as the “Stack Effect.”  The stack effect is created by temperature and pressure differences between the interior and exterior of your home.

Radiant barriers control radiant heat as it attempts to enter or leave your home.  The Low-E in your new windows is a form of radiant barrier.  Radiant barriers work by reducing heat transfer of thermal radiation across the air space between the roof deck and the attic floor.
